Definitions of Food Chain:
  1. a hierarchical series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food.
INFORMAL
      • a hierarchical system or structure within a particular sphere or group.
"a small paper toward the bottom of the journalistic food chain"
2. the series of processes by which food is grown or produced, sold, and eventually consumed.
"they have taken all reasonable steps to ensure that no contaminated products enter the food chain"

FOOD CHAIN was originally conceived as a show about the process of producing and consuming food—the earth, agriculture, water & land use, chains of food distribution and commentaries on how & what we eat. The title  also encompasses a broader definition of the phrase, i.e. a hierarchical system or structure—a pecking order, power dynamics and the like.

For this call for art, we are asking artists to explore the many meanings of this theme - how it relates to their process, materials and underlying concept. Given our central location to the Clement Street Farmers Market, we will be collaborating with various farmers/farms as well focusing the many food related businesses along this corridor of San Francisco, which the Richmond district was ranked the 27th coolest neighborhoods in TimeOut.com’s recent survey. They called “the entire neighborhood a microcosm of natural beauty, rich culture and incredible restaurants.” What determines that number (it was out of 40), is a mystery, however personally and locally, the Richmond district, in its entirety, is likely one of the most diverse and vibrant swaths of land in this city right now and is food prominent. We will be looking for works that relate to the cycles of food - farm to table, and beyond.

Fee: Sliding scale $5-$25, link to pay here. Submission fees go directly into our campaign to pay for the space and people it takes to host these exhibitions. Ability to pay has no bearing on works being accepted or not.

Submission guidelines:

- We will consider all forms of media, including 2D, 3D, video and sound.

- All 2D works must arrive ready to install on the wall, with DRings and wire, sawtooth hanger or cleat system. Works not ready to hang will not be accepted due to the short time we have to curate and get the show open to the public. If you need help with this, please reach out directly.

- Multi-media/Video submissions must be compatible as a mp4 video file.

- Works will be on display until sold or when the exhibition ends.
