Long before I was making bus maps, I was fascinated by where a drawing begins and how that “point of departure” develops into a completed piece. I work in layers and approach each piece as a way to connect and celebrate the place within a drawing where the layers overlap and celebrate each other. I love to bring order from chaos and then through it back into chaos to find new order. This can happen repeatedly over time and endlessly until I decide when to stop.
This piece is the beginning - the point of departure was in tracking the bumps and potholes in the roads in Washington, DC and letting the ink flow into paths made by the motion of the vehicle. Drawings like this underlie all of my encaustic and works on cardboard.
