Every lunar new year, it is celebrated with parades and dinners for that particular sign. However, it is always reminded for those born of that sign to be careful that year. Although there are fireworks lit and blessings made, people born under the zodiac year are advised to keep an eye out. Snakes are no exception. This year especially, it will be more important to look out for yourself and for your loved ones. This piece depicts the glory of the snake, but with a twist. A motorcycle bursts out from her belly, and mechanical elements fall around her skin. The snake still sits powerfully, staring at the viewer despite its body falling apart. At times, we can be consumed by the destruction and chaos around us. This piece encourages us to stay present despite this discomfort, but to be wary.
For this piece, I found a canvas on the side of the road, and picked it up and restored it. I love working with used materials, such as old plywood or frames. In the true recycling mentality, this piece was going to be thrown away but I wanted to bring life back into it.
